The Hungerford massacre 20 years on

I once owned a retarded cat that got the same vacant look on its face as Ryan has in this picture. He was a loner, bullied at school and had an unhealthy relationship with his mother. He was also into survival and violent films, he definitely wasn't all there.

Michael Ryan a 27 year old unemployed labourer on 19 August 1987 made his home town of Hungerford in Berkshire known all round the world.

At about 12.30pm a Susan Godfrey aged 35 was enjoying a picnic with her 2 children at Savernake forest 10 miles from Hungerford when Ryan abducted her at gun-point, and shot her thirteen times in the back dead.
Hindsight makes me think about all the events that it took to get the woman and her children to that place and time, it shows what a small piece of the puzzle we are and how we are in no way in control of our lives.

At 1pm firefighters were called to a fire at Ryan's house where they found the body of his mother Dorothy Ryan shot dead.
Dressed in combat gear and armed with a Kalashnikov , another automatic rifle, a Beretta pistol and hand grenade Ryan walked through the town to the main shopping area firing at people in their back gardens, in their cars or that just took his fancy, including a policeman who tried to tackle him.

He then barricaded himself into the school he went to as a child, the police tried to talk him out but Ryan shot himself in the head thus bringing the final death toll to 17 and 15 people injured.
Its not known why Ryan did what he did but I do remember the media using the name "Rambo" a lot, I think they should have used sicko as Rambo was a brave soldier not a wannabe that shoots unarmed civilians but you know the media anything to sell their trash newspapers.
A year later and mostly because of the Hungerford massacre the laws in Britain changed to ban the private owning of semi automatic weapons such as those that Ryan had.

One of the statements Ryan said near the end was "I wish I had stayed in bed."

Most of them put on some signs, like a ribbon or somewhat. Is there nothing known of the reasons? When I look back it seems to me that such events "amassed" in the 80ties, maybe I am wrong.

He was messed up in the head. The 8o's and 90's had quite a few attacks.
